When the joint of our big toe swells, it is a classic and often the first sign of gout. Folks typically tend to notice it sooner if they regularly wear shoes. But it also can be wrongly attributed to shoes and shoe fit. Gout comes about when uric acid crystals get deposited in our joints. The deposition of uric acid typically happen when there is a high amount of uric acid in our blood. Uric acid is a byproduct of digesting purine rich foods. The purine rich foods are red meat, organ meat, sea food. Fruits are also rich in purine.
Conventional treatment is to stop consumption of purine rich foods and/or medications to reduce uric acid in our blood. But meat and fruits are staple foods. So, the question that we often fail to ask is how come the same foods can be harmful to some and not others. There are people in Arctic like the Eskimos who consume meat exclusively. On top of it, we have seen gout symptoms continue or re-appear at a later time even after reducing uric acid through medications and/or lifestyle changes.
Our body has built-in mechanisms to maintain balance, homeostasis. Any excess in our blood will be removed by our kidneys. The same applies to uric acid as well. So, folks with kidney disease could have high uric acid in their blood. Alcohol makes our kidneys to retain more uric acid. So, alcoholics can see high uric acid. So, once we confirm kidneys are healthy, we need to go deeper.
An article published in 1863 by William Banting on obesity mentions how a low carb diet might help with gout. That got us started. Research shows us that people with high insulin produce more uric acid, and their kidneys don’t remove excess uric acid promptly.[1] So, we worked on reducing insulin secretion for one of our customers in France who was suffering from gout. This is something we already do for our diabetic customers. The customer has not had any recurrence of gout symptoms for the last 3 months. As a bonus, his waist circumference reduced by 6 cms from 95 to 89 cms and his weight reduced by 7 kgs from 82 to 75 kg.
